What is en bloc capsulectomy breast implant removal?

En bloc capsulectomy is surgery to remove breast implants and all or part of the capsule that forms around them. It is performed to address complications from previous surgery, or when a woman simply wants to have them extracted from the body, allowing breast tissue and muscles to settle back to their original positions.

Who is a candidate for breast implant removal in Newport Beach?

An en bloc capsulectomy removes the breast implant and its capsule as one unit without causing any contamination to the body. You may consider a breast explant procedure if you have experienced any of the following:

  • A ruptured or deflated implant
  • Symptoms associated with what some are referring to as Breast
    Implant Illness
  • Complications from scar tissue around an implant
  • Calcium deposits in the breasts
  • Dissatisfaction with the appearance of your breasts
  • Breast asymmetry or implant shifting
  • Have been diagnosed with breast cancer

What can I expect with en bloc capsulectomy breast implant removal?

This surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia in approximately two to three hours. It is typically done using an incision under the breast to allow for the implant and capsule to be removed as one unit.

Dr. Savalia gently removes the implant and the capsule that has formed around it in one unit. Once the implants and capsules have been removed, he carefully closes the incisions, and your breasts are supported by a compression bra.

If your breast skin has stretched to accommodate implants, sagging or drooping may occur after breast implant removal. If you do not want new implants, one option to address this issue is a breast lift, which involves removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple and areola for perkier breasts. Fat grafting is also an option in which fat is taken from another part of the body using liposuction, and injected into the breast to allow more volume and improved shape.

What is recovery like after a breast explant procedure in Newport Beach?

If you are in good health, you will probably only need one week of downtime after en bloc capsulectomy. You may resume normal daily activities, such as showering, light activity, and walking, within 24 hours after surgery. Post-operative pain and discomfort can be controlled with prescription medications. You can expect some swelling, which should resolve within a few weeks after surgery.

En Bloc Capsulectomy FAQs

What does “en bloc” mean?

“En bloc” is a French term meaning all together or at the same time.

Why is it important to remove the implant and capsule as a single unit?

When a surgeon removes the entire capsule with the breast implant contained within it, the silicone stays within the capsule during the removal process. This prevents chemicals and bacteria from leaking into the body.
