Putting Nervous Plastic Surgery Patients At Ease

The plastic surgery experience for patients can spark a variety of feelings: excitement, joy and even some nerves. Unlike the plastic surgeon performing the operation, surgery is not something a patient does every day, so it is understandable that they may feel a little anxious. Dr. Nirav Savalia is compassionate and understanding of these nerves; he hopes that sharing the following words of wisdom puts nervous patients at ease.

Confirm Board Certification

Confirming that the surgeon performing the procedure is board certified (in plastic surgery and not another specialty) should settle some of a patient’s nerves. Board certified plastic surgeons have demonstrated a particularly high aptitude for their field. They are extensively trained and must pass rigorous testing of their knowledge and skills. To maintain their certification, plastic surgeons also need to stay abreast of new techniques, technology and innovation in their field.

Clarify Experience

Clarifying a surgeon’s experience is another natural step to ease the fears and anxiety of nervous patients. Between their training and private practice, plastic surgeons have performed thousands of procedures and know how to handle even the most complex cases. There is simply no substitute for this kind of experience.

Explain Hospital Privileges or Operating Facilities

Hospitals only grant operating privileges to capable, responsible plastic surgeons. If a plastic surgeon maintains hospital privileges at several facilities, it shows they can be trusted.

On the other hand, some plastic surgeons like Dr. Savalia operate at stand-alone surgery centers instead of hospitals. Talking about the facilities and describing the features in place to protect patients’ safety is also helpful to ease nerves. Explaining the facility’s accreditation and what that means is another part of this conversation.

Show Before-and-After Photos

Before-and-after photos are very effective at reducing some patients’ nerves. It is comforting to look at cases where the “before” image is similar to the patient’s own body type or concerns, and watch the successful transformation to the “after” image. Reviewing before-and-after photo galleries with patients is also helpful to set reasonable expectations of a surgeon’s work.
