More Women Choose Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy

For many breast cancer survivors, breast reconstruction is an important part in the healing Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomyprocess. In fact, a recent study has found that the procedure is becoming more common among breast cancer patients. Here, Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Nirav Savalia looks at the findings in detail.

About the Study

A study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology looked at a total of 20,506 women who had been treated with mastectomy for breast cancer between 1998 and 2007. The study found that 46 percent of breast cancer patients underwent reconstruction in 1998 but that number rose to 63 percent by 2007. Researchers believe this increase is good news for women with breast cancer and reflects positively on cancer care in the United States.

Breast reconstruction has a big impact on quality of life for breast cancer survivors,” said the study’s first author, Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil. “As we are seeing more women survive breast cancer, we need to focus on long term survivorship issues and ensuring that women have access to this important part of treatment.”

The study also shed light on patients’ preferred reconstruction options. According to researchers, more women are receiving implants rather than recreating breasts using tissue from other parts of their body (autologous reconstruction). But no matter what reconstruction option patients choose, researchers believe the results are positive.

For many women, the breasts are an important part of their femininity, as well as an integral part of the healing process from breast cancer. Breast reconstruction can allow women to permanently regain their breast shape and make the chest look balanced when wearing a bra or swimsuit. Many breast cancer survivors feel happier about their bodies and how they feel about themselves. Several previous studies have shown that breast reconstruction can improve body image and self-esteem following breast cancer.
