Does Medical History Affect Plastic Surgery Candidacy?

Dr. Nirav Savalia’s number one priority is the safety and wellbeing of his patients. In order to provide the safest surgical experience possible, the Orange County plastic surgeon thoroughly evaluates each candidate’s medical history and health status prior to recommending a course of treatment.

This is important because certain health conditions can raise the risks of surgery or make it difficult to recover from an operation; also, certain medications may interact badly with anesthesia or other post-operative drugs.

In this post, Dr. Savalia explains some of the factors that he considers during consultations with interested candidates.

Smoking raises the risk of plastic surgery complications enormously. It can affect how the body recovers and heals from an operation. It can inhibit blood supply to the skin and healing tissues. It may intensify scarring. Similarly, heavy alcohol use can raise the risk of complications during and after surgery as well. Dr. Savalia strongly advises patients not to smoke, drink or use any nicotine products in the weeks leading up to surgery.

Current Medications, Vitamins and Supplements

In addition to knowing whether a plastic surgery candidate has any allergies to medication, Dr. Savalia also needs a comprehensive list of his or her prescription medications, vitamins and supplements. Certain drugs and supplements (e.g., fish oil, vitamin E) interact with anesthesia or thin the blood and affect clotting. Dr. Savalia can advise which medications to avoid and for how long before surgery.

Candidates that are extremely obese have a heightened risk of complications during surgery. They are more likely to develop blood clots in the legs or lungs, fluid collections at the surgical site and wound infections. They are also usually disappointed with the surgical outcomes of body contouring procedures. Dr. Savalia encourages plastic surgery candidates that struggle with their weight to consider whether the risks are worth it.

Other Serious Health Conditions

Dr. Savalia carefully evaluates candidates with a history of cancer, autoimmune disorders, blood clotting problems or recurrent serious infections. He wants to have a clear understanding of the patient’s health and wellness before recommending a course of action.
