Women are not the only ones concerned about the size of their breasts. It is estimated that as many as 4 in 10 men have enlarged breasts and, if recent reports are to be believed, a large number of these men seek surgical correction for the condition.
Dr. Nirav Savalia can vouch that the number of men inquiring about breast reduction is on the rise. He has noticed an uptick in requests for male breast reduction consultations and believes that for the right candidate, the surgery is tremendously rewarding.
Men Account for 40 Percent of Breast Reductions
Based on statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (to which Dr. Savalia belongs), men accounted for more than 40 percent of the 68,106 breast reduction procedures performed last year. It was the first time men have made up such a large percentage of breast reduction patients.
Enlarged breasts in men can have several different causes: hormonal fluctuations, certain medications, illicit drug use and health conditions. Every surgical candidate is screened to rule out an underlying medical condition that could cause breast enlargement. If it is determined the candidate is in good health but simply has excess glandular tissue, fat and skin on top of the breasts, breast reduction may be a suitable option for correction.
What Male Breast Reduction Can Accomplish
Every breast reduction procedure is different, based on the needs of the individual patient. A man can have excess glandular tissue sitting on top of the breasts; a combination of glandular and fatty tissue; lots of excess skin that needs to be removed; or stretched-out areolas. All of these issues can be addressed in a customized treatment plan developed by the plastic surgeon. Generally, male breast reduction surgery is well tolerated with a mild recovery period. Most men go back to work within a couple of days and can resume light exercise within a few weeks.
In addition to improving the appearance of the chest, male breast reduction can also relieve the social scrutiny felt by men with large breasts. Most men experience a significant boost in self-esteem and self-confidence, and become socially active and engaged after breast reduction.
