Is This Procedure Right for Me?

The ideal candidates for liposuction are in good mental and physical health and have realistic expectations about their results. Liposuction can be a very effective method of targeting stubborn fat deposits and shaping the areas of your body in question. However, it’s important to keep in mind that liposuction does not serve as a weight loss alternative and cannot get rid of cellulite, so the best candidates for lipo should be near their goal weight already. Liposuction offers a way to address specific areas of fat that that don’t respond to diet or exercise.

What Type of Liposuction Should I Have?

There are a few different types of liposuction, as well as various non-surgical body contouring alternatives. In my practice, however, I offer both tumescent and power liposuction, as I have found these to be most effective for my patients.

During tumescent liposuction (sometimes called traditional liposuction), I make very small incisions near the target area, typically shorter than the width of a pencil eraser. Through these access points, I next saturate the area with a solution that helps break apart fat cells for easy removal. Finally, the fat cells are removed via suction through a tube called a cannula.

Power-assisted liposuction is essentially the same as tumescent lipo, but in power-assisted liposuction, a special mechanized cannula vibrates rapidly to break up fat cells, making extracting them even easier. This method can be most effective in areas that are notoriously difficult to treat with tumescent liposuction, such as the male breasts, inner thighs and belly button area. In a consultation, we can discuss which type of liposuction I would recommend for your specific target areas.

Will I Be “Put Under” for the Procedure?

Whether general anesthesia is required during your liposuction appointment depends on the size of the areas being treated. For only small sections, you will most likely only need localized anesthesia, so you can be awake during the procedure. For larger sections, I’ll typically recommend using general anesthesia.

What’s the Difference between Liposuction and a Tummy Tuck?

These are two commonly confused body contouring procedures. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is focused on eliminating excess skin around the stomach and repairing lax or separated abdominal muscles. Liposuction effectively removes fat cells, but does not improve sagging skin or address abdominal muscles. Either surgery can deliver beautiful results in the right patient, and can be combined in some cases for more comprehensive body contouring results.

What about Non-Surgical Alternatives?

There are several new procedures advertised as non-surgical alternatives to liposuction, such as CoolSculpting®, Smartlipo® and others. These procedures are all fairly new, and therefore many of them haven’t undergone thorough, long-term testing. If you research reviews of any of these liposuction alternatives, you will notice that feedback is very hit or miss. Some people seem to swear by them, while others claim there were no results. Liposuction, on the other hand, has been through decades of testing and has a proven track record of impressive, long-lasting results.

What Should I Expect During My Consultation?

In your initial consultation, we will have the opportunity to get to know each other so I can better understand your goals for liposuction and what your expectations are. I’ll also evaluate the target areas to develop an informed idea of the best approach to take. Finally, we’ll talk about the benefits and risks associated with liposuction, and I’ll give you more information about what to expect during your surgery and recovery.

When Will I See Results?

Immediately after your surgery, your results will be obscured by swelling, and the treated area will be bandaged. I will ask you to wear special compression garments to help your body conform to its new contours, as well as provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions. As the swelling subsides over the following one to three months, you should be able to see your final results more clearly. While you can expect to see a noticeable improvement in their body shape after lipo, it’s still important to control your weight in order to maintain your results long-term.
