The Latest Trends in Plastic Surgery

What’s “trendy” in plastic surgery isn’t necessarily a critical consideration when pursuing cosmetic improvement. What’s best for you will depend on your specific needs and the recommendations of your plastic surgeon — not what’s trending or the latest fad.

Even so, well known Orange County plastic surgeon Dr. Nirav Savalia occasionally likes to reflect on some of the latest developments in his specialty, and note patterns he sees at his Newport Beach plastic surgery practice.

More Women Seeking Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is one of the fastest growing plastic surgery procedures, as it can significantly improve a woman’s quality of life. Long, large or prominent labia can be treated to reduce discomfort during sexual intercourse and exercise, and improve self-confidence. The goal is for the labia to look trim and symmetrical, and feel comfortable.

Bigger Is No Longer Better

Oversized breast implants are no longer a common choice in breast augmentation. More women are requesting smaller breast implants for modest results. Many are also requesting breast lift at the time of implant placement, for perky and youthful outcomes.

More Choices in Cosmetic Injectables

The demand for cosmetic injectables like Botox and dermal fillers continues to grow as more people recognize the incredible benefits. Manufacturers have responded to the demand by releasing new products to offer more anti-aging options.

Allergan (the maker of Botox and Juvederm) introduced Juvederm Voluma XC, the first and only filler FDA-approved to address volume loss in the cheeks. Once injected, Voluma adds youthful-looking fullness, volume and slight lift to the cheeks. The results of Voluma treatment can last up to two years.

Volbella is another newly introduced filler from the Juvederm family, designed specifically to add definition to the lips and smooth fine lines around the lips. The results of Volbella treatment last about a year.

An Attractive Alternative to Liposuction

When it comes to body sculpting, more patients are choosing laser-based body sculpting over traditional liposuction. Treatments like SculpSure permanently destroy fat cells without requiring surgery or significant recovery downtime. Patients are able to resume work, exercise and their normal routine soon after treatment. Fat reduction efforts are also focusing on areas of the body like “muffin tops” (i.e., excess fat around the abdomen that spills over the waistband), bra line and the neck.
