The Relationship of Collagen and Facial Fillers
Collagen is an essential building block of the skin and gives the skin both elasticity and firmness. As we age, collagen breaks down more easily and new collagen production declines. In addition, the soft layer of fat beneath the skin’s surface also diminishes with age. Injectable fillers replace lost collagen and fat to increase facial volume and plump up deeper lines and wrinkles.
Injectable fillers can be used for deep facial wrinkles, and are especially effective for the lines that run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth (known as nasolabial folds, laugh lines or parentheses lines). I also use fillers for volume enhancement in areas such as the cheeks to restore a more youthful facial fullness. Fillers can be used for lip enhancement whether to add to your natural volume or to restore lost fullness.
Commonly, I combine fillers with additional med spa treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic injections or a chemical peel. They also may be used to enhance the results of a facial cosmetic surgery procedure.
Our Filler Brands
Filler Spotlight: JUVÉDERM Voluma™
JUVÉDERM Voluma™ is the first and only injectable filler that is FDA-approved to add volume instantly to the cheeks. It achieves a subtle lift, helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile for up to 2 years. It is formulated differently than JUVÉDERM® and is focused on the cheek area. Filler Spotlight: Belotero®
Though it is one of the newer injectables on the market, I’ve found that Belotero® can offer many advantages, even for men and women already using other facial filler treatments. Here are just a few areas where Belotero® can be effective:
I’m happy to provide more information on this filler and give you my professional opinion about which filler options will be most effective for your skin needs during your consultation.
Recovery and Results
Facial injectable fillers require a small amount of “downtime.” Typically, you may experience some temporary swelling or redness at the injection site for 1 to 2 days. Occasionally, you may develop a visible bruise at the area of the injection, which may take 5 to 7 days to disappear. My advice is to plan appropriately and far enough in advance of important life/work events to allow for a beautiful result!
The improvement and results are visible immediately after treatment cases and can last from 6 to 24 months, depending on the brand of filler used and how quickly your body metabolizes the filler material.
