Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures at Newport Beach Center for Plastic Surgery, and as such, Dr. Nirav Savalia receives a great deal of inquiries about it. Most often he hears from patients that want to know whether they are a good candidate for the body sculpting procedure. If you have ever been curious, here are some indications that you may be a good candidate for liposuction.
You work out and eat right.
Being at, or close to, your target weight is an important criterion to qualify for surgery. Liposuction is not considered a safe or effective weight loss tool and is not appropriate for individuals that are overweight. You should be used to exercising regularly, eating right and making good choices to maintain your weight. With these habits in place, you are more likely to maintain your liposuction results long-term.
You have targeted areas of unwanted body fat.
Yet despite exercising and dieting, certain areas of your body are unresponsive to your body sculpting efforts. One area, such as your abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks or upper arms, may be out of proportion with the rest of your physique. Great candidates are individuals that may be fit and slim, but disproportionate in a selected area.
Your skin is firm and elastic.
Liposuction removes excess fat without having any bearing on the quality of the skin. If your skin is loose, removing fat can actually accentuate the laxity of your skin. With less fat “filling” the skin, it can sag even more than normal. This is why Dr. Savalia examines each candidate’s skin and notes its firmness and elasticity. Cellulite, or areas of dimpled, puckered skin, can also be worsened by liposuction.
You are in good health and do not have any serious medical conditions.
You should be in generally good health and free of any serious medical conditions that could raise the risks of surgery or compromise your body’s healing. If you have diabetes or an autoimmune disorder, liposuction is likely not right for you.
You have reasonable expectations of treatment.
It is very unlikely that you will have your “perfect figure” after liposuction. You should expect improvement, but not perfection. Setting expectations is part of the consultative process. Dr. Savalia will ask you to describe your ideal cosmetic outcomes and he will advise whether they are achievable, based on his experience and expertise.
