Is Your Makeup Aging You?

Makeup mistakes that may be aging youWhen used correctly, makeup can conceal a broad range of imperfections such as acne, dark circles under the eyes or wrinkles. Makeup can also enhance your best features and help you achieve a beautiful, more younger-looking appearance. However, the slightest mistake can have quite the opposite effect. In this blog post, Dr. Savalia of Newport Beach Center for Plastic Surgery takes a look at some of the most common makeup mistakes that can make you appear older, and ways to maintain a fresh, youthful appearance.

If you regularly use face powder, exchange it for a liquid or cream foundation formula to achieve a more polished look. Face powder settles into the creases around your eyes, forehead, cheeks and around the lips, enhancing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Gently apply foundation in specific spots to conceal blemishes and wrinkles and even out pigmentation. For a refreshed, youthful look, try the TNS Essential Serum by SkinMedica. Dr. Savalia offers this all-in-one product to patients that wish to minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and rough, dry skin. For uneven skin tone or discoloration, Dr. Savalia recommends the Lytera Skin Brightening Complex, an at-home treatment that can brighten the skin in as little as four weeks.

For a more long-term solution, BOTOX and injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Belotero can help. These injectable fillers can turn back the clock years by smoothing out wrinkles, laugh lines and creases.

Jagged or uneven eyeliner can cause aging or sagging eyelids to look worse. Instead of liquid liner, use a creamier, chubbier crayon to create a smoky effect. Avoid tugging the corners of the liner, as it creates crinkles. Eyeliner that is too dark or is over-applied can make dark under-eye circles stand out. Use brown eyeliner instead of black for a softer appearance. Apply eyeliner to your upper eyelids only for a more open, illuminated appearance.

For eyeshadow, be wary of metallic and shimmery shades that can create a garish look when applied to aging skin. These eyeshadows can call attention to creases, lines, crow’s feet and drooping eyelids. Instead, use matte and warm-tone eyeshadows and apply them with a light touch.

For sagging, puffy eyelids, SkinMedica’s TNS Eye Repair is a great option. This at-home treatment can soften the appearance of the eyes and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. For a more permanent fix, Dr. Savalia performs eyelid surgery, which corrects sagging upper eyelids, drooping lower eyelids or both for rejuvenated eyes.

As we age, the borders of the lips soften, making it easier for lipstick to bleed or smear. Try lining the lips with a pencil to hold in the lipstick. Then, use a small lipstick brush to dab on a sheer color with a light hand by starting at the center of the lips and spreading to the corners. Opt for natural lipstick colors like nudes and soft pinks instead of darker lip colors, which can make your lips look thinner and older.

If you have naturally thin lips, or if your lips are no longer as luscious as they once were, Dr. Savalia can help. He performs lip augmentation using injectable fillers to fill in the lips and erase the fine lines around the lips that cause lipstick to bleed. Most of Dr. Savalia’s patients take one to two days to recover before they can enjoy their fuller, more beautiful lips.

Five Ways to Erase Sun Damage

Erase sun damageSummer in Southern California wouldn’t be complete without beach time. Unfortunately, spending too much time at California’s beautiful beaches sometimes comes at a price. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can lead to wrinkles, age spots, or even sunburns. Fortunately, there are several ways you can erase sun damage and protect your skin from further harm. Here, Dr. Savalia from Newport Beach Center for Plastic Surgery shares five important tips to erase sun damage and restore your skin’s natural glow.

Exfoliate for Healthier Skin

The sun causes your skin to dry and dead skin cells to accumulate. Exfoliating your skin gets rid of these dead skin cells that clog up your pores and help make way for a new, healthy layer of skin. Exfoliating daily also helps your skin recover more quickly from sun damage and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Moisturize to Keep Skin Vibrant

Moisturizing not only hydrates the skin but also helps it look younger and brighter. Use a moisturizer with ingredients like vitamin C to revitalize the skin and keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay. Dr. Savalia offers his patients a variety of high-quality moisturizers, including SkinMedica’s Rejuvenative Moisture and iS Clinical’s Moisturizing Complex. Both of these moisturizers are rich in antioxidants that smooth and protect the skin.

Drink Water to Refresh Your Skin

Hydrating throughout the day can improve skin texture and appearance. Water helps release toxins from the skin and prevent it from looking flaky or dry. It’s recommended you drink six to eight glasses a day to maintain a youthful and radiant glow.

Rejuvenate Your Skin with a Chemical Peel

A chemical peel removes dead and damaged surface layers of skin to reveal healthy, younger-looking skin. This treatment can address fine lines, age spots and uneven complexion caused by sun damage. Many of Dr. Savalia’s patients like to combine chemical peels with other non-surgical procedures such as BOTOX for a more youthful appearance.

Invest in Quality Skincare Products

To keep your skin looking its absolute best, make sure you use only high-quality products on your skin. For skin discoloration and dark spots, try SkinMedica’s Lytera Skin Brightening Complex, which can improve your skin tone in as little as four weeks. SkinMedica’s Facial Cleanser keeps skin healthy and clean by removing excess oil and makeup. If you’re planning on spending more time out in the sun this summer, try SkinMedica’s Daily Physical Defense Sunscreen. This ultra-sheer broad resistance sunscreen is both fragrance- and oil-free. Dr. Savalia is proud to offer these skincare products and others at his Newport Beach office.

Is Facial Aging Subjective?

Subjective aging is the difference in how young people feel and how old they seem to be. A study on subjective aging concluded that most people feel about 13 years younger than they actually are. There’s certainly no denying that our society values youth and energy, and we especially value looking young and energetic.

Feeling Younger vs. Looking Younger

If you want to look as young as you feel, I recommend regular good exercise, proper nutrition, and keeping active – that’s true for people of all ages.

Looking young is a different matter, however. Youth is primarily shown through firm skin, good muscle tone and an even complexion. Gravity and age both affect the skin over time, leading to wrinkles and gradual sagging, even in the fittest people. Light skin tones are especially likely to suffer from further evidence of aging in the form of age spots and other pigmentation problems resulting from sun damage.

Looking Your Best at Any Age

Makeup may offer an effective short-term camouflage for minor signs of aging, but longer term correction can require surgical or nonsurgical cosmetic treatments to help your outside age match your inner vitality.

Many treatment options are available to help you look refreshed regardless of how many candles were on your last cake:

  • Chemical peels can help improve skin tone and fade pigment irregularities
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic injections diminish existing dynamic wrinkles and can help prevent future wrinkles from forming
  • Ultherapy® can lift and tighten lax skin by targeting the same supportive layer as a surgical facelift without surgery or scars

The right combination of facial rejuvenation procedures can help keep you looking your best at any age.

Facial Rejuvenation or Facelift: Which Is Best for You?

beautiful young womanIf you’re experiencing signs of aging, you have several surgical and nonsurgical options for looking younger, but which one is right for you? While facelifts remain one of the most commonly known ways to look younger, a wide range of noninvasive facial rejuvenation treatments can also provide men and women with excellent results. Is there one choice that’s better?

Facial Rejuvenation without Surgery

Facial rejuvenation comes in many forms:

  • Regularly scheduled facials and chemicals peels can help maintain a healthy glow and may be enough for many patients.
  • BOTOX® Cosmetic is becoming increasingly common among relatively young men and women for preventing fine lines and wrinkles, and erases existing fine lines in my older patients.
  • Injectable fillers can fill deep wrinkles as well as restoring lost fullness in the lips, cheeks, brow and chin.

Is It Time for a Facelift?

For men and women who notice more significantly drooping skin around the cheeks, chin, jowls and neck, as well as a loss of volume in the cheeks, a facelift offers a more comprehensive solution. By gently lifting and tightening your facial tissue before smoothing the skin over improved contours, a facelift can take years off of your face for long-term benefits.

Ultimately, the choice between facial rejuvenation or a facelift relies on your personal appearance concerns and issues you’d like addressed. An experienced facial rejuvenation surgeon can develop a customized treatment plan that focuses on nonsurgical treatments, facial cosmetic surgery or a combination of both for the best results.
