This is a commonly misunderstood aspect of breast implants, and one that Dr. Nirav Savalia, a top plastic surgery specialist in Orange County, would like to explain in detail in this post. One of the most important decisions you will need to make before your breast augmentation surgery is choosing the type of and shape of breast implant you will have placed. Breast implants come in two main shapes, round and teardrop. To help you with your decision, Dr. Savalia of Newport Beach Plastic Surgeons wants to share the following information regarding your implant choices.
Round Breast Implants
Following weight loss or pregnancy, it’s common for breasts to become deflated and lose volume, particularly in the upper half. If you seek more upper breast fullness, round breast implants may be the appropriate choice. Round implants, as their name suggests, are proportionate and symmetrical. Because of their shape, round implants do not look abnormal in case they rotate inside the breast pocket. Smooth round implants are a popular choice because they tend not to wrinkle as much as textured implants.
Many women who choose round implants do so for the lift, cleavage and fullness, resulting in younger-looking breasts. On the other hand, other patients do not choose round implants because they feel the implants look too artificial.
Teardrop-Shaped Breast Implants
Teardrop breast implants, also known as anatomical implants, closely resemble the shape of natural breasts, filling out more on the bottom than the top. While teardrop implants come in both saline and silicone gel, many women prefer form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants. Gummy bear implants have a textured shell, mimicking the look and feel of natural breasts. The textured outer shell also helps reduce the chance that the implant will rotate. However, in the rare case that they do rotate, the breast may look distorted.
Breast Implants Are a Personal Choice
When it comes down to it, the type of implants you choose is a personal decision. The type of breast implant that looks good on your friend may not be best for you. During your initial consultation with Dr. Savalia, he will discuss your personal concerns and goals to determine what type of breast implants are best for you. Here are a few factors that he will take into consideration before making his recommendations:
- Your body type and frame
- How much breast tissue currently exists
- Placement of the implant
- Incision site

Are you considering enhancing your breasts through breast lift or breast augmentation surgery? Learn the facts about both procedures from a trusted source. In this blog post, leading Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Nirav Savalia clears up some common misconceptions regarding breast lift and breast augmentation surgery.
Myth #1: Breast Implants are not Natural-Looking
Thanks to advances in breast implant technology, modern implants look and feel very natural. What’s more, a qualified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Savalia is highly-trained in the latest surgical techniques to deliver beautiful, natural-looking results. Dr. Savalia offers his Newport Beach patients several implant types, including the popular “gummy bear” implants. These highly cohesive silicone gel implants are designed to mimic natural breast tissue and are teardrop shaped, just like natural breasts.
Myth #2: Breastfeeding After Breast Lift or Augmentation is Dangerous
Many women worry their implants could leak and potentially contaminate their breast milk. This is highly unlikely as modern breast implants are strong and safe. It is important to note, however, that the incision pattern used to place a woman’s implants can affect her ability to properly breastfeed. For example, the periareolar approach involves making a small incision around the nipple, which can possibly interfere with the milk ducts. If you plan on breastfeeding in the future, Dr. Savalia can use an incision pattern that does not require making an incision close to the nipple or milk ducts.
Myth #3: Breast Augmentation Alone Can Correct Breast Sag
While breast augmentation can correct slight breast sag for some women, there are a few things to consider. First, if your nipple sits below your natural breast crease line, it is highly unlikely that breast augmentation can fully correct the breast sag. Second, while breast augmentation can help you achieve the breast size you have always wanted, the truth is, fuller breasts are more likely to sag due to the effects of gravity. For women who want bigger and perkier breasts, Dr. Savalia can combine breast augmentation with lift. Breast lift with implants resizes and reshapes your breasts for a more beautiful appearance.
Myth #4: Combining Breast Lift and Augmentation is Dangerous
Not only is combining breast lift with augmentation safe, there are several benefits to combining the two procedures. When performed by an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Savalia, breast lift with implants can achieve breasts that are both fuller and perkier, adding to a more beautiful physique. Additionally, a combination procedure means you only undergo surgery once and avoid additional visits to your plastic surgeon’s office. Your body heals all at once from breast lift and augmentation, allowing you to enjoy the results you seek faster.

Recently, the FDA approved a new type of breast implant called INSPIRA™. The new implant is the most recent addition to the Natrelle® product line, which already included anatomically shaped implants, round gel implants and silicone implants. The Natrelle® line now offers 243 size options with a range of projection styles. Here is a closer look at the new Natrelle INSPIRA™ implant and how it differs from existing options.
Natrelle INSPIRA™ Qualities
The new Natrelle INSPIRA™ implant is a silicone gel, smooth round implant. The smooth round implants are the more classic implant style as compared to modern anatomically shaped implants that mimic the natural distribution of breast volume. However, the new implant differs from other round implant options with its higher fill ratio.
The Benefits of Higher Fill Ratio
Higher fill ratio means that there is slightly more silicone gel filler per unit of volume. In the case of the INSPIRA™ implants, a more highly cohesive gel filler is also used. In my experience, I’ve noticed a slight difference in feel and lower wrinkle susceptibility in implants with a higher fill ratio. The denser volume of gel filler in the implant can result in a decreased chance of rippling and longer shell longevity.
The Value of a Breast Augmentation Specialist
While implant type and brand can certainly have an impact on your end results, there is nothing more crucial to natural-looking breast augmentation results than your surgeon. I take special care to understand my patient’s needs while approaching their surgery with the accumulated knowledge that comes only from years of experience. Excellent breast implant results can be possible with a range of implants, but a highly skilled surgeon is less interchangeable.
Healing from any surgical procedure is a gradual process. While my breast augmentation patients are often eager to see their end results and return to their normal routine, there are a few steps in the recovery process that should be respected so the body can heal properly. I like to think of the recovery from breast augmentation as consisting of three stages.
1. Immediate Recovery after Surgery
The immediate post-surgical recovery is what most patients think of when they hear the phrase “recovery period.” This stage refers to the first few days to week after surgery when the breasts are typically somewhat swollen, tender and bruised. During this stage, patients should rest as much as possible and can take oral pain relievers or muscle relaxants to alleviate discomfort.
2. Settling of Implants and Swelling Decrease
Following the immediate recovery after surgery is the phase when implants are beginning to settle, swelling is starting to subside and patients can begin to participate in their body’s accommodation of the implants. By massaging the breasts for a few minutes each day, patients can help their skin and tissue relax, allowing the breasts to eventually settle into position.
3. Returning to Your Normal Routine
Finally, you can enjoy resuming your work and social life with your new figure. While breast augmentation patients can usually return to work within a week after surgery, I usually recommend waiting at least two weeks before resuming a more active routine. Every patient heals at a different rate, and patients should consult their surgeon if they feel uncertain about particular activities.
Breast augmentation can help maintain a curvaceous look and boost self-esteem. Yet, as with any surgery, there are potential complications that could occur during surgery, some of which could need correction through breast revision later on. In an effort to reduce the possibility of revision surgery and other risks, it’s essential to choose a highly skilled surgeon for your procedure. There are three primary ways that surgical excellence can help ensure the best breast augmentation results as well as minimize the risk of undesired side effects.
1. Individualized Treatment Plans
While some surgeons will rush procedures in order to increase business volume, I believe in working with each patient to create an individualized plan that produces the best outcomes. Once we have established the best way to proceed for a specific patient, it is much easier to know how to better control possible complications.
2. Thorough Evaluations
Another way to reduce complications is to ensure a complete examination is performed to identify potential issues (such as anatomical considerations or health concerns) well before your breast augmentation. With comprehensive guidance from the first consultation through the entire procedure, my patients and I work together to ensure a positive outcome.
3. Extensive Training and Experience
Proper training combined with experience can also help to reduce augmentation complications. To ensure the greatest level of expertise, always look for a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation. This level of training reflects the highest degree of skills and knowledge necessary to provide the greatest success rates.
While many of my patients have a specific idea of what the perfect breasts should look like after breast enhancement, some may not realize that their goal figure involves not only a larger size, but also a higher placement. To achieve the often-held ideal of a high, full profile after breast augmentation, there are three reasons I recommend including a breast lift as well.
1. Can Better Meet Cosmetic Goals
Many women find that their hopes for breast enhancement surgery cannot be met by only one procedure. While women with a minor degree of drooping can sometimes find a solution in implants alone, others may have appearance concerns that are better addressed with a breast lift, like significant sagging. Combining a breast lift with implants helps my patients achieve both goals.
2. Addresses Volume and Placement
Implants don’t bring the breasts to a higher position, and may even increase the degree of existing sagging, especially in women who already have a generous breast volume. A lift restores a perkier profile, but won’t significantly boost cup size. Combining a lift with implants can increase the size of the breasts while simultaneously raising the bust line, enhancing cleavage and creating a flattering figure.
3. Brings Out the Best in Both Surgeries
Including a breast lift with your implants can enhance the results of both surgeries when compared to the results of either surgery alone. While a breast lift can tighten the skin and trim away any excess, breast implants can fill the breast first to result in less excess skin in the first place for minimal scarring. Additionally, a breast lift can reposition the nipple if necessary and even resize the areola, providing better balance to your enhanced breasts.
