That number is expected to increase when the 2016 statistics are released.

Is Your Makeup Aging You?

Makeup mistakes that may be aging youWhen used correctly, makeup can conceal a broad range of imperfections such as acne, dark circles under the eyes or wrinkles. Makeup can also enhance your best features and help you achieve a beautiful, more younger-looking appearance. However, the slightest mistake can have quite the opposite effect. In this blog post, Dr. Savalia of Newport Beach Center for Plastic Surgery takes a look at some of the most common makeup mistakes that can make you appear older, and ways to maintain a fresh, youthful appearance.

Face

If you regularly use face powder, exchange it for a liquid or cream foundation formula to achieve a more polished look. Face powder settles into the creases around your eyes, forehead, cheeks and around the lips, enhancing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Gently apply foundation in specific spots to conceal blemishes and wrinkles and even out pigmentation. For a refreshed, youthful look, try the TNS Essential Serum by SkinMedica. Dr. Savalia offers this all-in-one product to patients that wish to minimize the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and rough, dry skin. For uneven skin tone or discoloration, Dr. Savalia recommends the Lytera Skin Brightening Complex, an at-home treatment that can brighten the skin in as little as four weeks.

For a more long-term solution, BOTOX and injectable fillers such as Juvederm and Belotero can help. These injectable fillers can turn back the clock years by smoothing out wrinkles, laugh lines and creases.

Eyes

Jagged or uneven eyeliner can cause aging or sagging eyelids to look worse. Instead of liquid liner, use a creamier, chubbier crayon to create a smoky effect. Avoid tugging the corners of the liner, as it creates crinkles. Eyeliner that is too dark or is over-applied can make dark under-eye circles stand out. Use brown eyeliner instead of black for a softer appearance. Apply eyeliner to your upper eyelids only for a more open, illuminated appearance.

For eyeshadow, be wary of metallic and shimmery shades that can create a garish look when applied to aging skin. These eyeshadows can call attention to creases, lines, crow’s feet and drooping eyelids. Instead, use matte and warm-tone eyeshadows and apply them with a light touch.

For sagging, puffy eyelids, SkinMedica’s TNS Eye Repair is a great option. This at-home treatment can soften the appearance of the eyes and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. For a more permanent fix, Dr. Savalia performs eyelid surgery, which corrects sagging upper eyelids, drooping lower eyelids or both for rejuvenated eyes.

Lips

As we age, the borders of the lips soften, making it easier for lipstick to bleed or smear. Try lining the lips with a pencil to hold in the lipstick. Then, use a small lipstick brush to dab on a sheer color with a light hand by starting at the center of the lips and spreading to the corners. Opt for natural lipstick colors like nudes and soft pinks instead of darker lip colors, which can make your lips look thinner and older.

If you have naturally thin lips, or if your lips are no longer as luscious as they once were, Dr. Savalia can help. He performs lip augmentation using injectable fillers to fill in the lips and erase the fine lines around the lips that cause lipstick to bleed. Most of Dr. Savalia’s patients take one to two days to recover before they can enjoy their fuller, more beautiful lips.

Planning BOTOX® after Your Eyelid Surgery

Men and women looking for a solution to facial signs of aging frequently prioritize the eye area. Because the eyes are essentially what all other facial features revolve around, the eye area can be an important focus for facial rejuvenation.

Signs of Aging around the Eyes

Signs of aging around the eyes are often varied. Crow’s feet are dynamic wrinkles at the edges of the eyes caused by repetitive muscle movements. On the other hand, sagging eyelid skin, puffy bags under the eyes or drooping lids that interfere with your vision are caused by a loss of collagen that weakens the underlying facial muscles.

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, can help create a refreshed look in patients with drooping lids, excess eyelid skin or puffy bags under the eyes. However, one of the most common misconceptions about eyelid surgery is that the procedure can be used to treat crow’s feet. When it comes to those particular dynamic wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic offers a better solution.

Planning for BOTOX® with Blepharoplasty

How soon you can use BOTOX® after eyelid surgery depends on where you intend to use it and the progress of your recovery. Because the approach I take for eyelid surgery is customized to each patient’s needs, the best way to determine how soon you can use BOTOX® after your surgery is to schedule a consultation. In some areas of the face, BOTOX® can typically be used almost immediately after eyelid surgery or in conjunction. For more sensitive areas surrounding the eyes, I sometimes recommend that patients wait a couple of months before using BOTOX®.

Can BOTOX® Really Boost Your Breasts?

Woman in blackWhen considering any surgical procedure, there’s nothing wrong with doing a little investigation to see if there’s a nonsurgical alternative first. However, today’s market is crowded with dubious claims of miracle treatments, many of which offer limited benefits and may be quite risky. Perhaps you have heard of the so-called BOTOX® breast lift, a nonsurgical “solution” for lifting and firming the breasts using the familiar injectable. What’s the truth about using BOTOX® for boosting breasts?

The BOTOX® Breast Lift

While most familiarly touted as an anti-wrinkle treatment, there are actually many other uses for BOTOX®, including as a remedy for migraine headaches, underarm sweating and eye twitching. Is the latest “breakthrough use” for BOTOX® a temporary treatment for droopy breasts?

In theory, when used this way, BOTOX® relaxes the pectoral muscles and provides a temporary lift. In reality, the quantity of BOTOX® required to see any effect would likely be prohibitively expensive for most patients, and any results would last only a few months. Furthermore, this treatment would likely only work if your breasts are about a B cup or smaller.

Proven Results

Though it would be nice to have a simple, nonsurgical method to permanently lift the breasts and create a fuller, more youthful bust line, this off-label usage of BOTOX® simply isn’t it. A breast lift (with or without implants) remains the safest and most reliable way to create a fuller, firmer look with results that can last for many years to come.

Your best bet for boosting your breasts is to stick to the proven methods perfected over many years of surgical practice. One day, we may have a one-shot wonder treatment for sagging breasts, but until then, a skilled and experienced breast augmentation surgeon can create beautiful results with more trusted techniques.
