Is Botox, Dysport or Xeomin Best for Your Wrinkles?

Chances are, you have heard of Botox and its wrinkle-fighting abilities. But did you know that you have two other great options to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and create smoother-looking skin? Dysport and Xeomin may be newer, lesser known products, but they are incredibly safe and effective.

Here, Dr. Nirav Savalia, a premier cosmetic surgeon in Orange County, breaks down some of the commonalities and distinctions between the three products. Continue reading “Is Botox, Dysport or Xeomin Best for Your Wrinkles?”

Is BOTOX® a Better Crow’s Feet Solution than Eyelid Surgery?

Woman smilingBOTOX® Cosmetic and eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, are both common treatments for signs of aging in the eye area, BOTOX® is a nonsurgical injection that relaxes the facial muscles that create dynamic wrinkles, while eyelid surgery addresses overhanging eyelid skin that can give the eyes a drooping appearance. But when it comes to treating crow’s feet—the wrinkles extending from the outer edges of the eyes—is one option better?

The Nature of Crow’s Feet

Crow’s feet are dynamic wrinkles. This means that they are caused by repeated muscle movements. I find that treating dynamic wrinkles is best done with muscle relaxants like BOTOX®, which temporarily cause the targeted muscles to relax, smoothing out crow’s feet. By comparison, eyelid surgery cannot actually treat crow’s feet, since crow’s feet are not a result of loose or baggy skin.

However, eyelid surgery has other cosmetic uses. I commonly use eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of men and women who have puffy bags under the eyes or redundant eyelid skin that gives the appearance of being constantly tired or obstructs vision. While many of my blepharoplasty patients elect to have the procedure to address signs of aging, others use eyelid surgery to improve their natural eye shape regardless of age.

Combining Procedures

If you’re considering the benefits of either BOTOX® or eyelid surgery, you may find that a combination of both is the right approach for you. While eyelid surgery can bring a refreshed, alert, and youthful appearance to the eyes, BOTOX® can smooth out crow’s feet, frown lines, and under-eye lines, taking years off of your facial appearance.

Can BOTOX® Really Boost Your Breasts?

Woman in blackWhen considering any surgical procedure, there’s nothing wrong with doing a little investigation to see if there’s a nonsurgical alternative first. However, today’s market is crowded with dubious claims of miracle treatments, many of which offer limited benefits and may be quite risky. Perhaps you have heard of the so-called BOTOX® breast lift, a nonsurgical “solution” for lifting and firming the breasts using the familiar injectable. What’s the truth about using BOTOX® for boosting breasts?

The BOTOX® Breast Lift

While most familiarly touted as an anti-wrinkle treatment, there are actually many other uses for BOTOX®, including as a remedy for migraine headaches, underarm sweating and eye twitching. Is the latest “breakthrough use” for BOTOX® a temporary treatment for droopy breasts?

In theory, when used this way, BOTOX® relaxes the pectoral muscles and provides a temporary lift. In reality, the quantity of BOTOX® required to see any effect would likely be prohibitively expensive for most patients, and any results would last only a few months. Furthermore, this treatment would likely only work if your breasts are about a B cup or smaller.

Proven Results

Though it would be nice to have a simple, nonsurgical method to permanently lift the breasts and create a fuller, more youthful bust line, this off-label usage of BOTOX® simply isn’t it. A breast lift (with or without implants) remains the safest and most reliable way to create a fuller, firmer look with results that can last for many years to come.

Your best bet for boosting your breasts is to stick to the proven methods perfected over many years of surgical practice. One day, we may have a one-shot wonder treatment for sagging breasts, but until then, a skilled and experienced breast augmentation surgeon can create beautiful results with more trusted techniques.

3 Treatments to Try Before a Facelift

Eyelid Surgery
This patient photo shows the youthful look that’s possible through eyelid surgery.

Noticing that your reflection in the mirror is starting to look older than you feel can definitely be unsettling. For my patients who are concerned about early signs of aging but are not ready to commit to a facelift, I recommend a few alternatives they can try for great results.

1. BOTOX® and Injectable Fillers

BOTOX® was the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States last year, according to the 2013 plastic surgery statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. BOTOX® can smooth away dynamic wrinkles and work preventatively to keep skin looking younger, while dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® can restore lost volume to minimize deeper lines like the nasolabial folds.

2. Fat Transfer

As a natural alternative to synthetic fillers, I can add volume to the midface for a more youthful look or diminish wrinkles using fat cells taken from your own body. This microfat grafting offers organic, lasting results for facial rejuvenation.

3. Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is a wonderful solution for helping men and women look younger without a facelift. The delicate skin around the eyes makes this area particularly susceptible to showing signs of premature aging. With eyelid surgery, I can lift droopy lids and remove bags below the eyes for a well-rested, more alert appearance.
