Botox vs. Fillers: Which Is Right for Your Needs?

shutterstock_111998192When used correctly, Botox and dermal fillers are excellent tools to reverse common signs of aging without surgery. However, they work quite differently and are suited toward different signs of aging. If you are wondering which product is best for your specific age-related needs, the best way to find out is to meet with Dr. Nirav Savalia at his Newport Beach plastic surgery practice. But first, review this general information compiled by the doctor.

Botox

How It Works: Botox works by temporarily relaxing overactive facial muscles. As a response to the Botox, the wrinkles in the overlying skin become less noticeable and the treated area looks smoother and softer. The effects typically last three to six months, depending on how the body metabolizes the product.

Best For: Botox is designed for use on dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that form from repeated facial expressions (e.g., squinting, frowning and furrowing the brows). It is generally used to treat wrinkles and lines on the upper half of the face, including crow’s feet around the eyes, horizontal creases on the forehead and vertical frown lines between the eyebrows.

Dermal Fillers

How They Work: Dermal fillers act as a temporary cushion or padding wherever they are injected. They add volume, fullness and sometimes a slight lift to the treated area. While there are several types of dermal fillers, the most popular are formulated with hyaluronic acid, which the body naturally produces, or poly-l-lactic acid. Depending on the specific product and patient, dermal fillers can last for three months up to two years.

Best For: Dermal fillers are generally used to treat the middle and lower portions of the face, including the nose, lips and chin, or to sculpt the facial contours. Fillers can plump up a hollow or “thin” area, or fill in deep creases or facial folds. Products like Restylane and Sculptra can smooth the folds between the nose and lips (called the nasolabial folds) or the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin (marionette lines). These products can also create softness in the upper cheeks or temple area.
