Generally, facelift candidates are individuals who are in good health, do not smoke, and have realistic expectations of the procedure. But how important — if at all — is the age of a candidate? Dr. Nirav Savalia, a trusted plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, addresses that question here.
Age Is Less Important than Degree of Facial Aging
The age of the patient is not as important as the severity of their facial aging. Some patients start to show signs of facial aging at an earlier age than others. This is due to genetic factors and also lifestyle factors (e.g., how well a person takes care of him/herself and what they have been exposed to in their daily life).
When considering facelift and other facial rejuvenation procedures, most plastic surgeons recommend that patients seek surgical treatment sooner rather than later — while the signs of aging are moderate and the skin retains some of its elasticity. Postponing surgery until facial aging is severe and the skin has lost all of its elasticity reduces the chances for the best and longest-lasting result.
Although everyone ages at a different pace, there are some general age patterns among facelift candidates. Most female facelift patients are in their 50s (some in their late 40s); most male facelift candidates are in their 50s and 60s. Individuals in their 40s and 50s are more likely to be in good health and free of serious health conditions that raise the risks of surgery and prolong the surgical recovery period. This is another reason to consider surgery sooner rather than later.
What Facelift Accomplishes
In general, facelift surgery can improve the appearance of the following:
- Fallen or displaced fat
- Mid-face sagging
- Creases underneath the eyelids
- Creases extending from the nose to the corners of the mouth (nasolabial folds)
- Loss of skin tone in the lower face
- Lax or sagging skin
- A double chin
Every facelift procedure is tailored to the specific needs of the patient. Every patient is analyzed and asked to pinpoint what bothers them about their appearance. Then, the surgical plan is created, addressing each of the components of concern. The surgical plan may include repositioning fat deposits, removing excess skin, tweaking the facial muscles, lifting the deep layers of facial tissue and tightening the remaining skin.
