Aging on the Décolletage (and What to Do about It)

Many women spend a lot of time and money caring for the skin on their face, but neglect the delicate area of the chest and neck until it is too late.

Newport Beach plastic surgeon Nirav Savalia regularly sees patients whose décolletage has succumbed to the effects of time and age, and want a reliable anti-aging solution. Here, he explains in more detail how the décolletage can change over time, and what he can do to rejuvenate its appearance.

What Happens to the Décolletage Over Time

The décolletage can fall victim to the effects of gravity, sun damage, stress and the natural aging process. The skin, which is naturally thinner in this area than the face, can start to lose its natural support structures. These factors can contribute to sagging or a crepe-y texture, creases and visible discoloration. And unlike the face, many women fail to show their décolletage the same tender love and care, forgetting to apply sunscreen or moisturize the area regularly.

Smoothing Wrinkles with Injectables

One option to treat wrinkles and lines on the décolletage is injections of a dermal filler product. Certain hyaluronic acid fillers are thick and can leave visible lumps or a bluish tint in the treated area (because the décolletage skin is so thin), but a newer filler called Belotero can fill in wrinkles and lines without leaving any noticeable signs.

Tightening the Skin with Laser or Ultrasound Treatment

Injectable fillers are wonderful, but they won’t address sunspots or issues with pigmentation. They also cannot repair the crepe-y texture and sagging in the décolletage. Laser or ultrasound-assisted therapy can help to resolve these issues by working on the deeper layers of the skin.

Fractional laser treatment creates tiny micro-injuries in the skin and stimulates its natural repair process to improve discoloration and other issues in the skin. Ultrasound-assisted treatment stimulates the body’s production of collagen for tighter, smoother skin.

Restoring Youthful Contours with Fat Grafting

Another alternative to fillers for creating a smooth contour on the décolletage is fat grafting. Excess fat can be removed from areas like the abdomen or thighs, purified and then injected into the skin on the neck and chest. This diminishes wrinkles, improves texture and makes the skin more resilient. Also, the area where the fat was removed looks slimmer and sculpted after the procedure.
