4 Ways to Fight Facial Wrinkles

Don’t let pesky lines and wrinkles keep you from loving the way you look. Experienced Orange County plastic surgeon Nirav Savalia offers a range of treatments (both surgical and non-surgical) to help you attain the smooth, youthful-looking skin you desire. Read on as he explains some of the available options.

Botox

Botox is a cosmetic injectable that temporarily smoothes dynamic wrinkles, which are wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions (e.g., squinting, frowning). Botox is injected directly into the muscle that contracts when making the expression; as the muscle relaxes, the overlying wrinkle smoothes and the area looks more youthful. Botox is commonly used on the forehead and the creases around the corners of the eyes. The results last three to six months, on average.

Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are perfect for minimizing deeper wrinkles and facial folds, such as the nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth. Most fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that is responsible for retaining moisture to create a smooth complexion. Like Botox, the effects of fillers are temporary and treatment must be repeated to maintain the results.

Fat Transfer

Instead of Botox or fillers, some patients opt to have their own fat injected into the face to fill in wrinkles and lines. This process, known as fat transfer, involves harvesting fat from another area of the body, like the abdomen, purifying it and injecting it into the face to create a smoother and more youthful appearance. Results look very natural and may last longer than Botox and fillers.

Facelift

When wrinkles and folds become more severe, facelift surgery may be the more appropriate solution, as it comprehensively reverses signs of facial aging. Facelift involves lifting and tightening the underlying structures of the face and then re-draping the skin more tightly over the structures. This can smooth out deep folds around the nose, mouth and jawline; it can also tighten sagging, loose skin. Dr. Savalia can also customize facelift for patients not in need of full facelift.
