Choosing the Right Breast Implant Shape

Choosing a breast implant shapeOne of the most important decisions you will need to make before your breast augmentation surgery is choosing the type of and shape of breast implant you will have placed. Breast implants come in two main shapes, round and teardrop. To help you with your decision, Dr. Savalia of Newport Beach Plastic Surgeons wants to share the following information regarding your implant choices.

Round Breast Implants

Following weight loss or pregnancy, it’s common for breasts to become deflated and lose volume, particularly in the upper half. If you seek more upper breast fullness, round breast implants may be the appropriate choice. Round implants, as their name suggests, are proportionate and symmetrical. Because of their shape, round implants do not look abnormal in case they rotate inside the breast pocket. Smooth round implants are a popular choice because they tend not to wrinkle as much as textured implants.

Many women who choose round implants do so for the lift, cleavage and fullness, resulting in younger-looking breasts. On the other hand, other patients do not choose round implants because they feel the implants look too artificial.

Teardrop-Shaped Breast Implants

Teardrop breast implants, also known as anatomical implants, closely resemble the shape of natural breasts, filling out more on the bottom than the top. While teardrop implants come in both saline and silicone gel, many women prefer form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants. Gummy bear implants have a textured shell, mimicking the look and feel of natural breasts. The textured outer shell also helps reduce the chance that the implant will rotate. However, in the rare case that they do rotate, the breast may look distorted.

Breast Implants Are a Personal Choice

When it comes down to it, the type of implants you choose is a personal decision. The type of breast implant that looks good on your friend may not be best for you. During your initial consultation with Dr. Savalia, he will discuss your personal concerns and goals to determine what type of breast implants are best for you. Here are a few factors that he will take into consideration before making his recommendations:

  • Your body type and frame
  • How much breast tissue currently exists
  • Placement of the implant
  • Incision site
