Breast Augmentation with Breast Implants

As an in-demand Newport Beach plastic surgeon, Dr. Savalia understands the decision to have breast implant surgery is not only a medical decision, it is a personal one. The perception we have of ourselves defines who we are and how we introduce ourselves to the world. Not every woman may feel the need for breast implant surgery, but for many women throughout Orange County it has resulted in greater levels of body confidence and self esteem. There are many options available today for the woman who decides that breast implant surgery is right for her.

A personal consultation with Dr. Savalia prior to electing breast implant surgery can help you determine if this procedure is right for you. Some of the most common reasons women in Newport Beach have chosen breast implant surgery include a desire to:

  • enlarge small breasts
  • reshape breasts that are misshapen
  • reshape and enlarge breasts that have lost their shape or fullness due to pregnancy or age
  • balance breasts differing in size or shape

Breast implants can achieve many different goals. Psychological and emotional benefits include enhanced self esteem, a more satisfying body image, and greater levels of self confidence. Our expert and compassionate staff understand that every woman's motivation for pursuing breast implant surgery is different. We will work closely with you based on your needs, desires, and expectations to ensure you achieve the results you desire.

Types of breast implants

Breast implants come in many shapes and sizes, with differing inner and outer materials. Together, you and Orange County breast surgeon Dr. Savalia will select the options that are best suited for you.

All breast implants have an outer pliable envelope enclosing either a liquid (saline) or soft-solid (gel) substance. Breast implant shapes are generally round, oval, or contoured. The surface of most breast implants have traditionally been smooth to the touch, but today's options include a new textured surface.

Saline breast implants are filled with fluid that is compatible with the human body. The advantage is if the implant should leak and the saline is released, it can be safely absorbed by your body.

Silicone gel-filled breast implants were recently approved for use by the FDA after 14 years of thorough investigation regarding safety. It is the most common type of implant used worldwide, and its advantage is that it gives a more natural feel to the breast.

Risks of breast implant surgery

Breast implant surgery is a safe and common procedure. But as with any surgery, there are inherent risks and potential complications to be aware of. Dr. Savalia will discuss these with you during your consultation and answer all of your questions thoroughly.

Preparing for breast implant surgery

If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery. Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time prior to surgery. You will also need to arrange for someone to drive you home after breast implant surgery and to stay with you at least the first night. Dr. Savalia will advise you and provide additional preoperative instructions prior to the date of your surgery.

What will the day of the breast implant surgery be like?

Your breast implant surgery will be performed in one of our outpatient surgery centers in Newport Beach or surrounding Orange County. Medications are administered for your comfort by our board-certified anesthesiologist. Frequently, local anesthesia and intravenous sedation are used for patients undergoing breast implant surgery. For your safety during the operation, various monitors are used to check your heart, blood pressure, pulse, and the amount of oxygen circulating in your blood. When surgery is completed, you will be taken into a recovery area where you will continue to be closely monitored.

Recovery period from breast implant surgery - what can I expect?

During the first 24 to 48 hours after your breast implant surgery, you will experience the most discomfort. Your breasts may be swollen and tender. Although every woman's recovery time is different, you should be able to resume many of your regular activities after about one week. You will need to wait at least one month before resuming any strenuous activities.

Should any problems occur after surgery, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Savalia immediately. This is especially important if your temperature is elevated, or one of your breasts is noticeably more swollen and tender to the touch, painful, red, or inflamed.

Remember, you must not take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications, and you should not smoke or be exposed to heavy secondary smoke for a while following breast surgery.
